Pansies in the Farmstand, Markets, and Breaking Ground!

We're catching up on all the sun that seemed to be lacking over the last few weeks. We may not have seen our last frost, but it's springtime in our books. Aside from a few spots mowing and terminating cover crops, we'll break ground in earnest tomorrow and Friday. After a long, wet spring, it took the fields a little while to dry out enough to get in them with machinery, but the wind and the sun this week went a long way. I heard on the radio that this has been one of the windier springs in recent memory. It certainly blew here and knocked down our sign by the road in late winter. Luckily we got a good friend of the farm that makes beautiful signs! He was quick to repair it and even set in the new posts for us. Many thanks to Brian!

We've got garlic coming up and you can almost watch it grow on these sunny days. It's amazing how fast it gets going once we have a little sun. I'm determined to have a good garlic year this year after I made a critical mistake with the flame weeder last year. Returning members will be made right for the lack of garlic last year. It's something I love about having a membership base that mostly returns year after year. It was to late in the year last year to recoup the loss, but we get the opportunity to make it up to you this year. There's a lot out there and our members should not be wanting for garlic heading into the winter time. Now I just have to not burn it down!

Last notes:

The farm store and plant stand are open! Both will remain stocked through the spring. We stock the store every Thursday. We are partnering with Fasset Farm Nursery to offer native perrenial plants through the plant stand. Those should be available for sale in the coming weeks. All really great stuff and I have planted a number of their starts on our farm! We have got plenty of pansies in the stand as well as early veggie garden starts available. More below.

The Keene Market starts this Saturday and we will be there every saturday until the end of October! We are also going weekly to Cheshire Medical Center on Thursdays from 10am-2pm. Lots of great stuff in the next few weeks!

Support Access to Local Produce in the Monadnock Region

Thank you to everyone that has already contributed this year!

We are looking for contributions for the local food pantries. We provide weekly produce through the summer for the Fitzwilliam District Nursing Association, the Jaffrey Food Pantry, and the Rindge Food Pantry. Last year we provided 14 CSA shares each week distributed amongst the three pantries. Some of those shares were purchased by the pantries themselves, but the rest were provided by donations from members matched by the farm.

If you are interested in making a contribution to one of the area pantries, please reach out to jack@dogdaysnh.com to make arrangements. All shares purchased for the pantries by members are matched by the farm, so if you buy a half share for the pantry, we will match it to make it a full share. If you buy a full share, the pantry of your choice will receive two shares. Contributions towards the pantry shares are tax deductible and a receipt from the food pantry your share is going to is available upon request.

If you would like to help with food access in the Monadnock Region but are not able to buy a full or half share, our share care fund is also available. The share care fund is an optional add-on during share signup that goes towards subsidizing the cost of CSA shares through the Monadnock Farmshare Program. Through this program set up by local farmers and administered by the Cheshire County Conservation District, CSA members are able to get 50% off of the cost of their share. The CCCD reimburses the farm 35% of the cost of the share and the farm covers the remaining 15%. Last year we were able to contribute 10 shares to the farmshare program, this year we are offering 15.

The share care fund is also used when CSA members experience unexpected financial hardship and are not able to pay the remainder of their share balance. This is an option for all members, no questions asked. Hardship can fall upon any of us, so if you ever need a hand, please reach out and we will make sure you continue to receive your weekly produce.

Workshares Wanted

We are also looking for workshares on either Monday, Wednesday or Friday this year. Workshares receive a full CSA share with bread and eggs in exchange for 6hrs/week on the farm. Start times are a little more flexible for the workshare position, but we do ask that workshares come in the same day each week throughout the CSA season. If you would like to know more about workshare positions, pleas email jack@dogdaysnh.com
